Investing in global megatrends

Throughout history, human lives were often fundamentally changed by new inventions and trends. In pre-historic times, the discovery of fire and the advent of farming and husbandry paved the way for the first permanent settlements.

In the 19th century, the industrial revolution changed our lifestyles completely once more and in modern times the Internet revolutionised the way we communicate, book holidays and even date.

A lot of these megatrends gave rise to enormously successful businesses. The DJE - Multi Asset & Trends fund is seeking to find and capitalise on today’s pioneers.

What is a megatrend?

Megatrends are movements or developments with far-reaching effects on society and the way we live. These trends could be prevalent for a few years or even centuries. Most recent megatrends include digital innovations and technology as well as automation, which have impacted businesses and society.

DJE takes advantage of its in-house research team to find companies with business models that can benefit from current megatrends. Our 12 analysts monitor international markets and sift through more than 2,000 companies as well as vast datasets on a daily basis to identify new opportunities and manage current investments. Fund manager Moritz Rehmann then decides which companies and financial instruments go into the portfolio.

What megatrends are currently on the radar?

Charging ahead: global electric vehicle sales reach 10 billion mark

Electric cars and their charging stations have become a common sight in most of Europe, America and many other countries. In 2022 the global share of electric cars for all sales grew to 13%. Over 25 million cars are powered by batteries worldwide. It’s clear that the automotive sector is in the middle of a vast transformation process. As with other structural shifts, there will be winners and losers. It will likely pay off to invest in the former.

Obesity: a new challenge for modern medicine

Obesity and problems with overweightedness have become a major concern for healthcare in the western world - and also increasingly in developing countries. More and more people suffer from obesity and related health issues. These include cardiovascular problems, diabetes, various cancers and damage to joints and bones. The DJE - Multi-Asset & Trends fund invests in companies which contribute to the fight against excess weight and obesity with new medication. Other medical inventions like new vaccines, diagnostics tools and treatments could also have a lot of potential for human health – and consequently for investors.

Artificial intelligence: birth of a new era?

The potential of artificial intelligence to change our lives is enormous – and so seems to be people’s interest in the technology. The chatbot ChatGPT, which uses a large language model to generate text, hit the 100 million user milestone within just two months. For comparison: It took the popular social networking app Instagram more than 10 times as long to hit the same milestone. ChatGPT and other “intelligent” technologies promise significant productivity gains in many (business) areas. The market potential for artificial intelligence is estimated to be $329 billion in the year 2028 (source: Precedence Research).

Our focus is on profitable companies. We only add companies with good business models or products to our portfolio. We focus on cash generation and we would typically avoid loss-making enterprises.
